A Journey Through the Most Important Week in Christianity
Holy Week is the most important week in Christianity. This week of great reverence and reflection spans the final eight days of Jesus' life-from His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, to His Last Supper with His Apostles, to His execution as an enemy of the state, to His rising from the dead on the third day as He foretold to his disciples. It is astounding how much wisdom, insight, and inspiration are available to us during this one week celebrated each year by most Christians.
Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. On this day, Catholics carry blessed palm branches into church, symbolizing the crowd's welcoming gesture as Jesus rode into the city on a donkey. The Gospel readings recount the story of Jesus' death and Passion, inviting us to reflect on His sacrificial love and the profound significance of Holy Week. You can reflect on this passage by reading the Gospel of Mark Chapter 11, verses 1-11.
Holy Monday
On Holy Monday, Jesus entered the temple, made a whip out of chords, flipped the tables of money changers, and drove them out of the sacred space. This day offers an opportunity to reflect on the humanity of Jesus and the natural emotion of anger. Anger is a natural part of our human makeup, but it must be harnessed and controlled. Consider what anger and resentment you might be carrying and how you can channel that anger into productive and decisive action. Reflect further by reading John 2:13-22.
Holy Tuesday
Tuesday of Holy Week was a busy day for Jesus and the disciples. Jesus called out the Pharisees, taught by the fig tree, and preached extensively on the Mount of Olives. One of the most significant moments occurred when Mary anointed Jesus with expensive oil, demonstrating her love and care. Reflect on gratitude and consider how often you express appreciation for the people and experiences in your life. Read Matthew 21:23-27, Matthew 22: 34-40, or Matthew 26:6-13 for further reflection.
Spy Wednesday
Wednesday of Holy Week is often called Spy Wednesday because this is the day Judas Iscariot conspired to betray Jesus. Judas went to the chief priests and agreed to turn Jesus in for thirty pieces of silver. Reflect on experiences of betrayal and trust in your life and consider how you might seek forgiveness and make amends. Read Matthew 26:14-16 for further reflection.
Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum and commemorates the Last Supper, where Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. During this Mass, the priest washes the feet of some parish members in memory of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples. Reflect on the significance of the Eucharist and consider how Jesus has given Himself completely to you. Read Luke 22:14–16; 19-20 and Luke 22:39-46 for further reflection.
Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates the day Jesus was tortured, mocked, crucified, and died. Despite the incredible suffering, it is called Good Friday because Jesus' sacrifice saved us from our sins. Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday is a day of preparation for Easter. It is a day of darkness, doubt, anxiety, and confusion where faith is tested. Reflect on the fears that might be holding you back and pray for the courage to overcome them. Holy Saturday ends with the Easter Vigil, which begins with a bonfire and the lighting of candles, symbolizing the light of Christ. Reflect on your faith and the resurrection of Jesus. Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday is the day we celebrate Jesus' resurrection, the most important day in history. It marks the ultimate proof that Jesus is truly God. Reflect on areas of your life that need resurrection and pray for new life through Jesus. Easter is not just a one-day celebration but an entire season that goes through to Pentecost. Reflect on how God is inviting you to bring new life into your relationships, faith, and community. Read the accounts of the Resurrection in the Gospels for further reflection.
Holy Week offers a powerful lens through which we can view our lives and expand our understanding of ourselves and others. Each day of Holy Week presents an opportunity to reflect, pray, and engage with the significant events in the life of Jesus. As we journey through this sacred week, let us embrace the wisdom and inspiration it offers, deepening our faith and connecting more profoundly with the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
