Charles Dickens' literary classic, "A Christmas Carol", has become a staple of annual Christmas traditions. However, Charles Dickens wrote another short story between 1846 and 1849 centered around the life of Jesus Christ exclusively for his children entitled, "The Life of Our Lord". The short story was part of the Dickens' family Christmas traditions, as Charles Dickens read it every year to his children with an emphasis on being good. With Charles Dickens, curiously enough, expressly forbidding the publication of this short story during his own lifetime. However, after a family vote, "The Life of Our Lord" by Charles Dickens was published in 1934. Now, in 2025, "The Life of Our Lord" by Charles Dickens is being translated onto the big screen via the animated movie entitled, "The King of Kings".
In "The Life of Our Lord", Charles Dickens relates "My Dear Children, I am very anxious that you should know something about the History of Jesus Christ. For everybody ought to know about Him. No one ever lived who was so good, so kind, so gentle, and so sorry for all people who did wrong, or were in any way ill or miserable, as He was." And in the animated movie version of "Life of Our Lord", "The King of Kings", features the same retelling of the story of the New Testament as Charles Dickens explains to his young son, Walter, and Walter's pet kitty kat, how unlike Walter's hero, King Arthur, Jesus Christ was the real King of Kings. With the animated film emphasizing via its Charles Dickens character, that "A true king serves his subjects."
Rated PG, "The King of Kings" has a running time of an hour and forty minutes. It is set to be released this Friday, April 11th, 2025 by Angel Studios. With "The King of Kings", in spite of the modern age of ambivalence towards all things Christian, even managing to collect an impressive array of actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, and Uma Thurman, to do the voice overs of its animated characters.
