Rogers and Smith denounce brutal murders in Kashmir

April 23, 2025 - Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers (R-AL03) and Adam Smith (D-Washington), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a joint statement in response to a horrific attack in Kashmir that killed more than two dozen people and left at least 17 others wounded.

"We stand in solidarity with our Indian partners in condemning the appalling terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that targeted innocent civilians, including tourists, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 26 people," said Rogers and Smith. "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the people of India during this difficult time."

India is a major power globally and specifically in the Asian region thus any instability there has potential ramifications far beyond the Indian subcontinent.

"India is a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific region," continued Rogers and Smith. "Our countries have made great strides in cooperation to: counter terrorism, preserve the rules-based international order, and strengthen stability. We should continue to work together to ensure those who violently attack civilians are brought to justice and that our countries remain secure, free, and prosperous. We reaffirm our commitment to working together to counter terrorism and to promote regional stability and security through strong bilateral cooperation."

On Tuesday, President Donald J. Trump (R) called the deadly attack on tourists at a resort in Indian-controlled Kashmir "deeply disturbing." The President expressed condolences to the victims in a post on his Truth Social account.

"Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir. The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism," President Trump wrote. "We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. [Indian] Prime Minister [Narendra] Modi, and the incredible people of India, have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!"

Vice President J.D. Vance was in India with his family on a diplomatic trip. He met with Modi on Monday to express his sympathies.

"Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people," VP Vance wrote on his X social media account. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack."

According to original reporting by The Hill and the Associated Press - Authorities report that at least 20 tourists were killed when gunmen opened fire on people strolling through a popular meadow in Pahalgam, which is a religious holy site for Hindus. Dozens more tourists were injured.

"Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice," vowed Indian President Modi. "They will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger."

Congressman Mike Rogers has represented Alabama's Third Congressional District since 2002.
