April 15, 2025 – MONTGOMERY, AL - The Alabama Senate concurred with House changes to the Teacher's workman's compensation bill. Presently Alabama teachers and education workers do not have workman's compensation insurance. This legislation would change that.
Senate Bill 1 (SB1) is sponsored by state Senator Sam Givhan (R-Madison).
"This is our PEEHIP workman's comp bill," said Sen. Givhan. "I want to thank everyone for their help on this bill. When people ask me why I am carrying this bill, I tell them that our teachers and education workers do not have workman's compensation insurance and they can't believe it."
Givan says that the House changes to the bill were mostly technical and he asked that the Senate concur with the House changes.
The motion to concur with the House version of SB1 passed 27 to 1
Both Houses have passed SB1 and now that the Senate has confirmed with House changes the bill goes to the Governor for her consideration.
"I hope to see the Governor sign this very soon," said Sen. Givhan. "This is an important step moving forward for teachers."
Presently, if a teacher is injured on the job, she has to use sick leave and paid time off while she recovers.
SB1 passed unanimously in the Senate back in February. The House of Representatives passed an amended version last week.
If signed by the Governor, SB1 would allow injured teachers and education employees to continue receiving their salary for up to 90 days. It would help cover some of their medical expenses.
Governor Ivey asked the Legislature to pass this legislation in her state of the state address back in February. This was one of her top legislative priorities for the legislative session.
