Attorney General Marshall: It Is Time to Re-Ignite America's Energy Grid with Coal

March 24, 2025 - MONTGOMERY, AL. - Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall sent a 23 state coalition letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum in support of the Trump Administration's efforts to re-ignite America's national energy grid with coal. The Biden administration implemented aggressive and shortsighted anti-fossil fuel policies that pushed energy supply down to the lowest level of coal production since 1960. A revitalized coal industry is needed to meet the nation's growing energy demands-due to a growing population, an increased use of electrified vehicles, and energy needs for data-storage centers and crypto mining.

"America's energy crisis is real, and we are in a difficult position. Coal is critical for our energy future, and it provides the reliability, baseload capacity, and affordable energy necessary to fuel our nation's growth," stated Attorney General Marshall. "From artificial intelligence to manufacturing, we need coal-fired power to remain globally competitive, support industries like steel and aluminum, and protect our national security. Without coal, we risk losing our technological edge and the prosperity that comes with it. It's time to unleash the power of American coal and ensure energy security for the future of our country."

In addition to Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia joined the West Virginia-, North Dakota- and Wyoming-led letter.
