March 11, 2025, DADEVILLE, AL Businessman Robert L. McCollum announced recently that he is running in the Republican primary for Alabama State Auditor in 2026. The Auditor's race will be open, because incumbent Auditor Andrew Sorrell (R) has already announced that he is running for Secretary of State.
McCollum, a lifelong Republican and a small business owner.
McCollum has previously made two failed runs for statewide office.
In 2022 he forced a runoff election for Public Service Commission (PSC) Place #2, challenging popular two term incumbent Chris "Chip" Beeker. McCollum received over 173,000 votes (36%) to run a strong second to Beeker's 208,000 votes (43%).
In 2024 McCollum ran against popular PSC President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh. McCollum got over 39% of the vote.
McCollum describes himself as a loyal Trump Republican, who faithfully supports the GOP ticket.
McCollum said that the office of State Auditor is a position where he can use his business experience and his proven ability to connect with Alabama's conservative citizens to serve the state he loves.
"I want the Alabama conservative, Chrisian voters of this state to have a friend in state office. I want them to have a person in statewide elective office that will 'go with them or go FOR them" to get the results they need to get from our government," McCollum said in a statement. "There needs to be more people in state government who know about making a payroll, making, working a hard honest day, dealing with the realities of a common Alabamian's life. I do that every day."
"I'm not an ivory tower kind of guy," McCollum said. "I'm an honest-to-God Alabama working man. I go to church, I go to work, enjoy spending time with friends and family. That's the kind of guy I am. I do an honest day's work every day. And that's the kind of person we need in the Auditor's office."
McCollum said that the number one requirement#1 to be Auditor is honesty.
"I believe the reason I have gained the support of hundreds of thousands of Alabama voters in my previous two races is that voters sense that I'm honest – and I'm one of US," McCollum said.
McCollum said that he plans to begin touring every corner of Alabama in the coming days to listen to Alabama Republicans.
"I want to find out what our great conservative Alabamians want their Auditor's office to do," McCollum said. "And I will share my vision of honest, conservative, tight-fisted management in state government. I genuinely believe that Alabama conservatives will like what I will do in Montgomery as State Auditor."
McCollum is the only announced candidate for state auditor at this time. Other names are being discussed for this position.
The Republican primary will be May 26, 2026.
