February 21, 2025 – WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) released a statement after voting yes on the Senate budget in the early morning hours after a marathon overnight Senate session. This budget includes $175 billion to fund President Trump's ongoing efforts to regain control of the U.S. Southern border and increase deportations of people who are illegally here in the country.
"77 million Americans delivered a mandate when they voted for President Trump on November 5th," stated Senator Tuberville. "They want President Trump's agenda, and they want it now. A critical part of the President's agenda is immediately securing the border and stopping the flow of terrorists, cartels, and lethal drugs into this country. Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Border Czar Tom Homan, encounters at the border have plummeted. But we need to make sure the administration has the funding they need to finish the wall, support law enforcement, and detain and deport criminals. For those reasons, I voted yes on the Senate budget."
"Now, we can get to work on delivering the President's economic mandate to lower taxes, rein in spending, and get the American economy booming again," Tuberville concluded.
It took ten hours to pass the spending proposal as Senate Democrats used delay tactics to slow the process. Democrats introduced dozens of amendments that were mostly voted down by the GOP.
Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama) also voted in favor of the proposal to keep the government funded.
Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and all the Senate Democrats voted in opposition to the budget.
One or two Republicans did defect on a few proposals. These included measures aimed at preventing health care cuts and on reinstating federal workers whose positions were cut by Trump and DOG in mass layoffs.
The Republicans were able to pass roughly $340 billion in funding, which included $175 billion in for border operations and immigration enforcement. They also voted in favor of $150 billion in defense spending.
There is still much work to do on the budgets as there are key differences between the House and Senate budget proposals.
Tommy Tuberville was elected to the Senate in 2020. He represents Alabama in the United States Senate where he serves a a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans' Affairs, HELP, and Aging Committees.
