February 19, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Howard Lutnick as U.S. Secretary of Commerce in a surprisingly close vote of 51 to 45.
U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-Alabama.) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) both voted in support of President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Senator Britt released a statement supportive of Lutnick and Trump's vision for moving the American economy forward.
"Hardworking Americans deserves a U.S. Secretary of Commerce who puts their economic needs first-fighting unfair trade practices and supporting families across Alabama and America. That is exactly what Howard Lutnick is going to do," said Senator Britt. "I was proud to vote for his confirmation today. I am confident under President Trump's leadership Secretary Lutnick will institute an America first agenda that shows the world our country means businesses and we will stand up for our people and interests."
Senator Tuberville applauded Lutnick in an interview with Larry Kudlow on the Fox Business Channel.
"I had a chance to meet with Howard a couple of weeks ago to give my input on a couple of the cabinet picks," said Senator Tuberville. "He has worked very closely with President Trump."
"He is not just a great businessperson, he is a great American," Sen. Tuberville added. "He believes in this country and that is what we need working with President Trump somebody who believes in America first and is going to hit the ground running. He will do a great job as the head of the Commerce Department."
Senator Britt met with Lutnick in December to discuss his background and plans for the role.
After the meeting, Senator Britt said, "My friend Howard Lutnick's proven business acumen and commitment to American prosperity make him an excellent choice for Commerce Secretary . . . We had a great conversation about Alabama's economic priorities and opportunities."
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) led the Senate fight to confirm Lutnick.
Howard Lutnick is a prominent American businessman best known for his role as Chairman and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, a leading global financial services firm. Born on July 14, 1961, Lutnick's early life was marked by tragedy when he lost both of his parents by the age of 18. Despite these challenges, he earned a degree in economics from Haverford College in 1983.
Lutnick joined Cantor Fitzgerald shortly after graduation and quickly rose through the ranks due to his sharp business acumen and innovative thinking. He became CEO in 1991, guiding the firm through significant growth and expansion. However, his leadership was most critically tested during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which devastated Cantor Fitzgerald's headquarters in the World Trade Center. Lutnick's response to the tragedy, including his efforts to support the families of the victims, earned him both praise and criticism.
Lutnick is expected to leverage his extensive business experience to promote American economic interests. Known for his resilience and commitment to American prosperity, Lutnick continues to be a significant figure in the financial and political landscapes of the United States.
