February 13, 2025 – MONTGOMERY, AL – Genesis reads "He created them, male and female; and he blessed them. And he called their name Adam, in the day when they were created,"(Genesis 5:2 Catholic Public Domain Version).
The state of Alabama agrees. Governor Kay Ivey (R) on Thursday signed Senate Bill 79, the "What is a Woman?" bill.
This legislation's sponsors - Senator April Weaver (R-Briarfield) and Representative Susan Dubose (R-Greystone) joined Governor Ivey in her office as she made it official with her signature.
"If the Good Lord made you a boy, you're a boy. And if He made you a girl, you're a girl," Gov. Ivey said. "In Alabama, we believe there are two genders: Male and female. There is nothing complicated or controversial about it. Today, I was proud to officially answer the question "What is a Woman?" with my signature on Senate Bill 79. It did not take a biologist to figure it out. Thank you, Senator April Weaver and Representative Susan Dubose for your work on this."
Senator Weaver told reporters: "The passage of Senate Bill 79 is a significant milestone for our state. It underscores our commitment to upholding traditional values and ensuring that our laws reflect the fundamental truths we hold dear. I am honored to have worked on this important legislation alongside Representative Susan Dubose and to have received Governor Ivey's support. This bill is a testament to our belief in the clear and distinct roles of men and women as defined by nature. Our efforts have been guided by the principles of clarity and simplicity, and we are proud to stand firm in our convictions."
Dubose passed the bill in the House last year; but it got bogged down in the last days of the session in the Alabama Senate.
Rep Dubose told north Alabama talk radio host Yaffee: "We in Alabama have been ahead of the game. We know what a man is. We know what a woman is. We almost completed this bill last year. There just wasn't quite enough time. It flew through the House of Representatives, flew through committee in the Senate, just did not get a final vote on the Senate floor.."
Whatever went wrong in the Senate in 2024, Weaver and Senate Pro Tem. Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) made sure that there was no repeat performance this session – prioritizing the signature social conservative legislation.
This was not an issue until men in numbers began running around in dresses and claiming they were really girls.
"Unfortunately, the meaning and definition of man and woman has become unclear to some people that don't have common sense," Dubose said, "and so we want to clarify it in our administrative codes. This will be for the courts and everybody in our state to know the this is the true biological definition of male, female, man, woman, mother, father."
