February 23, 2025 – The Alabama economy has been roaring and nowhere is that more apparent than at the Port of Mobile where ships are lined up to take on Alabama exports. According to the Alabama Department of Commerce, state exports totaled $26.8 billion in 2024. That is down 2% from 2023, but up 30% from 2019.
The Alabama Department of Commerce has put a lot of time and effort into the Export Alabama initiative and those efforts are paying off.
Christina Stimpson is the Chief Officer of Commerce's Office of Global Business.
"Alabama businesses continue to demonstrate their strength in the global marketplace, exporting high-quality products to over 200 countries," Chief Officer Stimpson said. "Our office is committed to supporting Alabama companies to ensure they have the tools and resources to remain competitive worldwide."
Ellen McNair is the Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.
"From automobiles and aerospace components to chemicals and advanced manufacturing products, Alabama-made goods are reaching markets around the world, fueling economic growth at home," Secretary McNair said. "By expanding our global trade footprint, we are not only increasing opportunities for our businesses but also reinforcing Alabama's reputation as a leader in innovation and high-quality production."
Economic developer Dr. Nicole J. Wadsworth told the Alabama Gazette, "The Made in Alabama brand is recognized throughout the world thanks to driven individuals in the public and private sector who have positive business relationships and ongoing communication with our trade partners. Alabama's companies remain strong and competitive in global markets as a result of dedicated human capital. Exports numbers totaling over $26.8 billion in the past year speak volumes; products and services created by Alabamians are an integral part of the global economy."
Alabama exports went to 201 countries in 2024, an increase from 190 in the previous year.
The top destinations for Alabama exports last year were:
1. Canada: $4.3 billion (up 7%)
2. Mexico: $4.2 billion (up 32%)
3. China: $4.1 billion (up 11%)
4. Germany: $4.1 billion (down 19%)
5. Japan: $880 million (down 8%)
Tariffs by the Trump administration on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China could potentially lead those countries to retaliate against American goods coming from Alabama. The three nations are Alabama's largest trading partners.
Other leading destinations for Alabama exports in 2024 were South Korea, India, Brazil and the United Kingdom, according to Commerce data. Export growth was particularly strong last year to countries including Costa Rica, Thailand, Singapore and Taiwan.
