February 1, 2025 – OXFORD, MS – the number one ranked Auburn Tigers men's basketball team went on the road to visit the number 23 ranked University of Mississippi and came away with a 92 to 82 win.
Senior Center/Forward Johni Broome led the Tigers with 20 points, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 12 rebounds. The Auburn big man appears to have recovered completely from a serious ankle injury that had kept him out of the lineup for two weeks. The Tigers – on a 13 game winning streak – did not lose a game with Broome out.
It was an all-around team effort for the Tigers with five players scoring in the double digits. Senior Guard Chad Baker-Mazara scored 18 points; while adding 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Senior Guard Denver Jones added 16 points, 1 rebound, and 4 assists. Senior Guard Miles Kelly had 15 points. Senior Center Dylan Cardwell had 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists. Freshman Guard Tahaad Pettiford scored nine points, 1 rebound, and 5 assists.
"It was a great win, our best road win of the year," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "So many contributions and we never panicked. Great environment here at Ole Miss and we appreciate all the Auburn faithful for coming out. A tough, gritty road win."
Bruce Pearl is the winningest coach in Auburn history. He has 662 total wins in his career.
The win gives Auburn a 20-win season – the fourth in a row – and just the 16th in program history.
This was just the third time in the history of the Auburn program that they reached 20 wins in just their first 21 games. Auburn is now 20 and 1 on the season – with their only loss coming at Cameron Indoor on the campus of the Duke Blue Devils. Auburn is 8 and 0 in the conference – and the last unbeaten team in the SEC.
While Auburn has superb big man play from Broome and Cardwell the Tigers were also excellent from the three point line making 14. Five different players hit three-point shots for the Tigers.
Auburn plays Oklahoma next on Tuesday night in Auburn. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
The University of Alabama also won on Saturday. They are the number 4 team in the country setting up for a coming in-state showdown between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide. Both teams are on track for a high seed in the NCAA tournament.
