The people's voice of reason
January 10, 2025 – BIRMINGHAM, AL – Winter has descended on the northern half of Alabama. Birmingham, Huntsville, Cullman, Florence, Gadsden and the surrounding communities are waking up to a snow-covered landscape more appropriate to Minnesota than to the Heart of Dixie.
Forecasters were predicting three to five inches of snow and from what we can tell at dawn – here in St. Clair County – they nailed it.
Please stay off the roads as rain fell for two hours in much of the area prior to the temperatures plunging before freezing and all the snow piled on - on top of those wet roads – meaning that in a lot of places there are sheets of ice beneath the snow making travel conditions extremely dangerous in many parts of the state.
The schools in the affected counties – for the most part – are closed. Same with most government offices and many businesses. At least call in to your employer to verify that they are in deed open before getting on the roads.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R) put the 37 counties in the northern half of Alabama under a state of emergency yesterday.
At this point most persons should shelter in place until weather conditions improve.
