Tuberville Continues Leading Effort to Make Daylight Savings Time Permanent in the Senate

January 8, 2025 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-ALlabmaa joined U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Florida) in reintroducing the Sunshine Protection Act, or S.29, to officially "lock the clock" to end the twice-yearly time change and make Daylight Saving Time (DST) the national year-round standard. In 2022, Senator Tuberville's DST legislation passed the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent, but then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) refused to bring the legislation to the floor for a vote.

"Out of all the legislative efforts I've been part of in my four years in Congress, the thing I hear about the most from Alabamians is their desire to stop changing our clocks twice a year," said Senator Tuberville. "I was proud to lead the effort to get the Sunshine Protection Act passed by unanimous consent in 2022 and look forward to working with Sen. Rick Scott to get it completely across the finish line to 'lock the clock' once and for all."

"I hear from Americans constantly that they are sick and tired of changing their clocks twice a year – it's an unnecessary, decades-old practice that's more of an annoyance to families than benefit to them," said Senator Scott. "In 2018, as Governor of Florida, I signed legislation that would allow the state to opt out of the practice of changing the time and I've been a leading effort in getting this done on the federal level. I'm excited to have President Trump back in the White House and fully on board to LOCK THE CLOCK so we can get this good bill passed and make this common-sense change that will simplify and benefit the lives of American families."

Senators Tuberville and Scott are joined by Senators Katie Britt (R-Alabama), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico), James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming), Ed Markey (D-Washinton), Patty Murray (D-Washington), Alex Padilla (D-California), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Tina Smith (D-Minnesota), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island), and Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) in introducing the bill.

The legislation, if enacted, would apply to those states who currently participate in DST, which most states observe for eight months out of the year. Standard Time is observed for the four winter months from November to March. The bill would negate the need for Americans to change their clocks twice a year. Many studies have shown that making DST permanent could benefit the economy and the country.

The Alabama Legislature passed a bill to permanently implement DST year-round in 2021, but legislation must first be passed at the federal level in order for the state law to take effect.

Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans' Affairs, Aging, and HELP Committees.
