December 30, 2024 – MONTGOMERY, AL – authorities are still doing damage surveys after severe weather struck Alabama on Sunday. Straight line winds and tornados are being credited with being responsible for damage in Limestone, Macon, Morgan, and Montgomery counties.
The National Weather Services (NWS) is reporting that an EF-1 tornado hit the Athens, Ala. Area around midnight and was on the ground for five minutes.
The storm uprooted a 100-year-old tree in front of the Limestone County Courthouse. A number of businesses and homes in Athens have suffered roof damage. A warehouse in Athens was destroyed.
Tornadoes and straight line winds have caused structural damage to a number of buildings in Montgomery and Macon Counties.
A tornado touchdown is being credited with being responsible for the damage in Macon County.
Alabama can be impacted by severe weather and tornadoes in all 12 months of the year.
Over a hundred thousand customers were without power late on Sunday night. Most of those customers' power was restored and crews are working to restore all of the power.
As of press time, no fatalities have been reported from the storms.
