The people's voice of reason
December 18, 2024 – the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reject a Trump-approved continuing resolution (C.R.) that would have kept the U.S. government funded and avoid a government shutdown. This failed in the House after President-elect Donald J. Trump (R) came out against a bipartisan C.R. negotiated by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) with Democrats who still control the U.S. Senate and the White House.
Congressman Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) voted for the Trump backed bill. He explained his decision to vote for this version of the C.R. on the X social media platform.
"I voted yes for the American Relief Act because this CR is a necessary solution to provide immediate support to our farmers and disaster victims who are facing serious challenges, it also highlights the need for accountability in our budgeting process," said Rep. Moore.
There were a number of items in the earlier bipartisan bill that Trump and billionaire Trump supporter Elon Musk objected to including funding for a federal government funded new football stadium for the NFL's Washington Commanders. Moore thanked Trump for his work of the bill.
"THANK YOU, @realDonaldTrump, for removing all of the pork out of the 1,500+ page monstrosity of a CR," Moore wrote on X.
Without passage of a bill to keep the federal government funded a partial government shutdown will go into effect before Christmas.
"The DC swamp wants you terrified of a government shutdown so they can ram through backdoor deals that sell out the American taxpayers," Moore said on X. "Accountability is coming."
Musk was a vocal critic of the bipartisan bill, that he and Trump helped kill. Moore shared Musk's concern.
"@elonmusk is right -the CR is a bloated omnibus masquerading as a short-term funding measure. I'm a NO," said Moore on the earlier version of the bill. "I support aid for our producers, but I won't vote for legislation that funds $100+ billion in woke, weaponized and wasteful items at the expense of American taxpayers."
38 House Republicans voted NO on the Trump C.R. Only 2 House Democrats voted YES as the GOP bill went down in flames late on Thursday. All 6 of Alabama's Republican members of the House voted for the failed bill.
There is no guarantee that the Senate – which is still controlled by Democrats through January 1 – will pass the C.R. even if the House passes it or that President Joseph R. Biden (D) – still President until January 20 – will sign the C.R. if Congress manages to send one to his desk.
After Trump's preferred C.R. failed to clear the House of Representatives – despite a Republican majority – negotiators are working through the night to craft a funding bill that 1) can pass the House without Trump torpedoing it and 2) pass the Senate in a former that President Biden will sign.
That could be mission impossible.
Barry Moore is in his second term representing Alabama's Second Congressional District; but due to a court ordered redistricting combined with a hard-fought GOP primary win will be representing Alabama's First Congressional District starting in January.
