The people's voice of reason
December 1, 2024 – WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hunter Biden received an early Christmas present from his father, President Joseph R. Biden, in the form of a pardon for gun and tax charges. President Biden issued the pardon on Sunday despite previously having pledged not to.
"Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter," President Biden said in a statement. "From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department's decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted."
President Biden said that he felt that his son was unfairly targeted by prosecutors for being his son.
President Biden said he believes in the justice system but believes "raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further."
"I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision," Biden said.
In June, Hunter Biden was found guilty of lying on a gun store form asking if he was addicted to narcotics in order to purchase a revolver.
Hunter was also found guilty of nine charges, including failing to pay his taxes from 2016 through 2019. Hunter Biden had not been sentenced yet; but was facing potential years in a federal prison.
"I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering," Hunter Biden said in a statement following the announcement of the presidential pardon.
President-elect Donald J. Trump (R) went to Truth Social to ask why Biden was not also pardoning the Trump supporters who have been given lengthy prison sentences for their role in the January 6, 2021 riots.
"Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!" President Trump posted Sunday night.
Republicans maintain that the pro-Trump protesters from Jan. 6 are political prisoners being held for years on crimes; whereas liberal anti-police protesters who committed more serious acts of mischief were never indicted by liberal prosecutors.
Noted conservative law professor Johnathan Turley posted on X, "With this pardon, Joe Biden shredded any residue of veracity and credibility as president. For years, he was repeatedly asked if he met any of his son's clients. He lied and denied it. He was repeatedly asked if he was aware of Hunter's foreign dealings. He repeatedly lied and denied it. He was asked if he would pardon his son. He repeatedly lied and denied it... ..Notably, when he was running for reelection and denying that he would pardon Hunter, few believed him. Some of us noted that Hunter's bizarre legal strategy only made sense if he was told that, in the worst-case scenario, his father would pardon him..."
Congressman Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) reposted an X comment from President Biden claiming that "No one is above the law."
Rep. Moore commented, "What he meant to say is, "No one is above the law, except for my son Hunter Biden and the millions of illegal immigrants I let pour across our open border."
