The people's voice of reason
On September 29, 2024, a capacity crowd in the Davis Theater in Montgomery attended the showing of Beyond a War, a documentary film about the personal stories of Dr. Jack Hawkins, Chancellor of Troy University, and Dr. Le Cong Co, President of Duy Tan University in Vietnam.
More than 50 years ago, Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Le Conog Co were on opposite sides of the Vietnam War. Dr. Hawkins served as a platoon leader in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Dr. Le Cong Co fought against American forces as a member of the Viet Cong. Captain Gary Mitchell Rose, a U.S. Medal of Honor recipient, described his combat experiences as a U.S. Army Special Forces Medic who distinguished himself treating wounded soldiers despite being wounded himself multiple times.
A picture of the Three Service Men statue was on display in the lobby of the Davis Theater. It was designed by Frederick Hart and is an iconic part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Now Troy University and the American Village are partnering to bring the famous work to Alabama. Replicas of the statue will be on display at the Troy and American Village campuses as an enduring tribute to the service and sacrifice of Vietnam veterans
