Sens. Tuberville, Britt and Graham introduce a resolution celebrating "Religious Education Week

October 1, 2024 - WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) and Katie Britt (R-Alabama) joined U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) in cosponsoring a resolution designating October 6-12, 2024 as "Religious Education Week" to emphasize the importance of religious education and celebrate the schools and organizations engaged in religious education.

"Education is the key that unlocks opportunity," said Senator Tuberville. "Every child in America ought to have the option of going to a religious school. There's a myth out there that our Founders wanted to keep God out of the public square. That just isn't true. This country was built on love of God, love of country, and love of family."

"South Carolina's children are our greatest resource and future leaders," said Sen. Graham. "I am proud to introduce this resolution to emphasize the importance of continued religious education and the organizations who provide it."

Joining U.S. Senators Tuberville, Britt, and Graham are U.S. Senators John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Mike Braun (R-Indiana), Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Steve Daines (R-Montana), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Mississippi), John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming), Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), Markwayne Mullin (R-Oklahoma), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Marco Rubio (R-Florida), Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri), Rick Scott (R-Florida), Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi), and Todd Young (R-Indiana) in cosponsoring the resolution.

"Studies like the one published by the International Journal of Mental Health Systems in 2019 have shown that religious education can be ''instrumental to improving adolescent mental health'' by helping children learn how to make decisions based on morals, promoting less risky choices, and encouraging connectedness within a community, which can enhance self-esteem and well-being;"

This resolution is also supported by Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty, Coalition for Jewish Values, Foundation for American Christian Education, School Time Bible Ministries, Association of Christian Schools International, Agudath Israel of America, and Catholic Education Partners Inc.
