The people's voice of reason
A new Superman movie is being released this Saturday, September 20th, 2024. However, rather than being a cartoon or a superhero action movie, this biographical documentary focuses on the story of the New York actor, Christopher Reeve. Christopher Reeve portrayed the caped superhero, Super Man, in the "Superman" film series that were made between 1978 and 1987. And with his disarming and winsome smile, coupled with a good physique at 6' 4" tall, it seemed like the actor had a charmed life laid out before him. Which, as an actor who received offers for major acting roles even before finishing college, he did. That is until May 27th, 1995 when he suffered a horse accident in an equestrian competition in Culpepper, Virginia which left him
paralyzed from the neck down at the age of 42.
After his accident that rendered him a quadriplegic, Christopher Reeve admitted that he felt like he "had ruined" his life and everybody else's. But, due in large part to his competitive nature
and the support he had from his family and friends, the athletically inclined actor began an intensive exercise regimen with the hopes of keeping his body in as good of shape as he could in case a cure for his disability was ever found. He also became an activist for the disabled and promoting rights for the disabled, specifically focusing on bringing attention to spinal cord injuries, right up until his passing at the age of 52 in 2004.
A British and American co-production, the PG-13 rated biographical documentary is an hour and forty-four minutes in length. And described by critics as deeply moving and inspiring as the
actor goes from portraying the truth, justice, and American way minded superhero, to being a superhero in real life who tries to make the best of his situation.
