Letter to the American Church: the movie

Based on the book, “Letter to the American Church”, by bestselling author Eric Metaxas, a Yale graduate who grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church, “Letter to the American Church – the Movie” is the big screen version of the book that is produced by the author himself. The author believes so strongly in the message of the documentary that he is offering screenings of the movie to Churches for free. It normally is accompanied by a fee if one rents it online. But, as Metaxas states, he is so “convinced that the American Church has arrived at an impossibly, almost unbearably significant moment” that he is urging Churches to have screenings of his book in film version. And on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, there will be a screening of “Letter to the American Church - The Movie” hosted by the West Shelby County Pastor, Tim Trimble at 7:00PM. There will be a meet and greet beginning at 6:30PM prior to the showing of the movie. And the address of the screening is 2694 Highway 58, Helena, Alabama. For those worried about attending a movie during the traditional work week, the running time for the movie is approximately one hour.

To give one an idea of the plot of the documentary, “Letter to the American Church”, opens with Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s radio message to the German Church right after Hitler rises to power in the onset of the Nazi era in Germany. Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a noted German theologian who is the author of the 1937 book, “The Cost of Discipleship”. And who died in a Nazi concentration camp in Germany in 1945 at thirty-nine years of age. Bonhoeffer, himself, is the subject of a forthcoming movie being released by Angel Studios in November.

While there is an alarmist element to the movie, as it draws comparisons to the state of current events in the USA today to 1930s Nazi era Germany, “Letter to the American Church – the Movie” is described as engaging and well produced. With Metaxas stating that “This is the hour of the American Church” as he urges a call to action and condemns complicity within the Church.
