Tuberville says that Kamala is a communist

August 18, 2024 - On Friday, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) said that Vice President Kamala Harris's economics plans shows that she is telling American people that "she's a communist."

Last week Vice President Kamala Harris (D) – the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States unveiled her economic plan – imposing price controls on food, energy, and other consumer goods – while subsidizing down payments for first time home buyers.

Senator Tuberville denounced the plan on his X social media account.

"Kamala means the taxpayers will continue to foot the bill," Sen. Tuberville wrote. "...just like student loans...just like illegal immigration...just like price fixing...just like bloated entitlement programs destroying our workforce."

"She's telling the American people she's a communist," continued Tuberville.

Tuberville shared a quote from a news article by Selina Wang on Thursday.

"NEW: Harris will propose providing up to $25K in down payment support for 1st time homeowners, with more generous support for 1st generation homeowners, according to campaign official," said Sen. Tuberville. "She'll announce tomorrow in NC, along w/ her plan to ban corporate price-gouging on groceries."

The Harris plan has been widely panned by economists.

Gavin Roberts studied anti-price gouging laws some states passed during the pandemic. The controls he observed at grocery stores led to motivating people "to go buy goods more than they would if prices had risen."

Roberts, the Chair of Weber State University economics department told CNN that when prices are high, in most cases, the best policy action in response is actually taking no action. That causes consumers who are deterred by, say, high prices of beef, to instead purchase another type of meat or protein. That helps keep beef on the grocery store shelves for people who want it enough to pay the higher prices and avoids shortages and panic purchasers to begin hoarding.

Roberts said that it would deter new competition from moving in to take advantage of the bigger profit margins, preventing new competition that would potentially have helped lower prices in the long run.

Fox Business host Charles Payne said, "What we are talking about is a war on capitalism. They really do not believe in capitalism."

"They are infatuated with some sort of big government – knows all - does all and can provide all," said Payne. "They are not fans of the for-profit motivation or capitalism, because it is not even about economics about them. They wrap it in a veneer of economics, but it's always about control. They want to pick winners and losers and also be able to punish those losers. They talk so vitriolically about companies. The last time Kroger reported their earnings their profit margin went down from 3.5% to 2.9%. I don't care what your definition of gouging you may have, but that's not it."

"We have been the best economy in the world since the late 1800s," Payne explained. "The question is if we are so great, why do you want to change us. Why do you want to change all of the things that made us the greatest country in the world. Why? Think about that. Think of all of the great things out there that are changing society. That are changing humanity. Look at the stock market, we are 60% of the world's stock market. Number two China is about five percent. European countries, you can not even find them on there. Do we really want to be that."

Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration, agreed with Roberts' view that anti-price gouging laws could inadvertently harm consumers.

"This is not a sensible policy, and I think the biggest hope is that it ends up being a lot of rhetoric and no reality," Furman told the New York Times. "There's no upside here, and there is some downside."

Instead of pursuing anti-price gouging policies, Roberts recommended that Harris investigate what, if anything, is stopping new parties from entering concentrated industries.
