Kay Ivey sets next nitrogen hypoxia execution

On Monay, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (R) announced that she has set the time frame for the execution of Carey Grayson. This will be just the second time that the state has used nitrogen hypoxia to execute a condemned man.

Grayson's execution is set to occur beginning 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2024 and expiring Friday, November 22.

The governor has sent a letter to Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm, as well as the Supreme Court's order informing them of her intentions.

Carey Grayson and his three accomplices were convicted in the 1994 killing of 37-year-old Vickie Deblieux in Jefferson County. Ms. Deblieux was hitchhiking from Tennessee to her mother's home in Louisiana when the four young men offered her a ride. Instead they took her to a wooded area, assaulted her and threw her off a cliff. They took a piece of hide from her corpse, tanned it, and made necklaces for themselves with it.

Grayson's attorney has appealed to federal court seeking to overturn the ruling – claiming that nitrogen hypoxia is an inhumane method of execution.
