My interview with Congressman Mo Brooks regarding the attempted assassination of President Trump

July 16, 2024

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing former Congressman Mo Brooks yesterday to gain his insights regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Mr. Brooks, the target of a would-be assassin in 2017, told me in great detail about the ordeal.

While practicing for the congressional baseball game, Brooks and his colleagues came under a withering barrage of gunfire that lasted ten minutes. With bullets whizzing through the air, Brooks, with no thoughts of his safety, sprung into action, pulling off his belt to use as a tourniquet on the leg of a wounded staffer. Brooks, Congressman Brad Winstrup, and others ran to aid of wounded Congressman Steve Scalise.

Grievously wounded, with the Divine hand of Providence upon him, Congressman Winstrup, a former combat surgeon, took control of the situation

Dr. Winstrup instructed Brooks, who had no previous medical training, to put his hand over the wound, preventing Scalise from bleeding out. Had it not been for the heroic actions of these two men, Congress's Scalise would not be here today. Mr. Brooks later received awards for his selfless acts of bravery and heroism that day.

The FBI later informed Brooks that the assassin' had written his name on the list of his intended targets. Being a target of political violence because of his conservative views. I asked Mr. Brooks, "Why, in nearly all cases, assassins were left-wing radicals?" He responded, "The socialists are committed to their ideology. I don't know if credit is the right word for it hut credit where credit is due. They want America to become socialist. They want America to become communist. They want America to become left-wing. They want America to be diminished, and they are willing to fight. Even to the point of killing to achieve their political goals." To counter this threat, he opined, "Those of us who believe in Liberty and freedom we need to be just as committed, not to the point of violence, mind you, but as Americans continues to respect and adhere to the foundational principles have combined to make us the greatest nation in world history and have given us lifestyles that are the envy of the world."

Next, I asked the congressman what his first thoughts were when he saw the attempted assassination of former President Trump. "Horrifying and sickening to see an assassination attempt on TV as this thing is being broadcast. The second reaction was one of great pride. Donald Trump got up even though he was wounded and raised his fist in the air and pumped it so the crowd know he was okay and urged them to fight for our country, and the crowd started chanting USA. My subsequent reaction was, for the grace of God, to go I because, like Donald Trump, I was the victim of an attempted assassination, and we were blessed that our shooter wasn't any good."

The Congressman agreed when I asked if he thought his image would be one of the most iconic in history and if Trump would receive a bounce in the polls. He replied that "Donald Trump should win hands down over mentally incapacitated Joe Biden."

Next, we discussed how this happened. I asked the congressman about all the events he's ever been to. Did he ever think somebody could get within 160 yards of a president with a rifle? "Shocked," he replied at "how law enforcement had not secured that rooftop. Making sure there was no would-be assassin is one of the most significant security failures of the Secret Service in the history of the United States."

Congressman Brooks, hot over this breach in security, "didn't buy their story" of that being the fault of local law enforcement because it was outside of the perimeter. " "Well , that begs the question he asked. Who the hell set the perimeter?"

Brooks went on to further say that "it is a bad when it's the audience who sees him climbing up the building and crawling across the rooftop to try discharge his weapon."I asked Brooks about some reports I had heard from unnamed sources, and he elaborated "that it was still too early and we would know more in the coming days."

Next, he hypothesized on what the RNC would have looked like this week had former President Trump been assassinated. He said, "It would have been chaos and helped the socialist win the House, Senate and the Presidency in November."

I asked the congressman if this would change protocol for protection in future events by putting plexiglass before the podium. He "didn't think so. Security may want that, but that Is not an image a candidate would wish to have."

Lastly, I asked the congressman if there was anything he wanted to add that "we should take from this and not let this discourage us from engaging in vigorous political debate with our foes. Be aggressive in your language and try to persuade people of the righteousness of our calls. And those who engage in violence to further their calls or the actual danger to our Republic. Because the way to settle our disputes is at The ballot box and not through Force of arms."
