Candidate for District 5 of the Clay County Commission arrested for voter fraud

(Ashland, Ala) -Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announces the arrest of Terry Andrew Heflin, the Democratic candidate for District 5 of the Clay County Commission, on 7 felony counts of voter fraud.

Heflin, 45, a resident of Clay County, was charged with 7 counts of unlawful use of absentee ballots. Specifically, the indictment alleges that Heflin falsified applications to vote absentee for multiple people and then used those people's names to vote for himself by absentee ballot. Each count of unlawful use of an absentee ballot is a Class C felony punishable by 1 year and 1 day to 10 years in prison.

Heflin turned himself in to the Clay County Sheriff's Office and is currently being held at the Clay County jail.

The Clay County News is reporting that Terry Andrew Heflin has been arrested on 7 counts of absentee ballot fraud. Heflin won the Democratic party runoff over Beverly Hill for District 5 Commissioner race back in June. He was set to face Republican Robert Schoggins in November' but these charges obviously now overshadows that election.

The case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General's Special Prosecutions Division. No further information about the investigation or about Heflin's alleged crimes may be released at this time.

An indictment simply means that the Clay County Grand Jury found that prosecutors presented enough evidence that a trial should take place. Heflin is presumed innocent, like all accused persons, until a jury of his peers rule otherwise.
