Birmingham Travelers get new, low-fare flights to South Florida

Spirit Airlines will offer the only nonstop flight from Birmingham (BHM) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) beginning this October.

Spirit Airlines will provide low-fare travel from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) starting on October 10, 2024. Spirit will have the only nonstop flight from BHM to Fort Lauderdale (FLL). This will also be the first time the airline serves the state of Alabama and will provide low-fare flight options to the Sunshine State and one-stop connections to Latin America and the Caribbean.

"We can't wait to welcome aboard Birmingham travelers looking for both an affordable and convenient way to enjoy Fort Lauderdale's beautiful beaches," said Kirby in a statement. "Our new daily service will make flying to Fort Lauderdale more accessible and will provide an attractive alternative to driving. It will also make it easier for our Florida Guests to enjoy Birmingham's southern hospitality."

To celebrate the new route, Spirit is offering limited-time introductory fares starting at $69* for travel October 10 through November 19, 2024. All fares are one-way, subject to 14-day advance purchase and availability.

Spirit also offers fast onboard Wi-Fi that allows Guests to watch content from streaming services. To get the $69 one-way fares, 14-day advance purchase is required. Subject to availability.

Southwest has also adds two additional new nonstop destinations to their Birmingham lineup.

Southwest is adding nonstop service from Birmingham (BHM) to Phoenix (PHX) beginning in October. Southwest is also adding daily nonstop service to Nashville starting in November.

Economic developer Dr. Nicole Jones Wadsworth told the Alabama Gazette, "Southwest Airlines' newest additions of nonstop flights from Birmingham to Phoenix (announced today) and Spirit Airlines’ nonstop to Fort Lauderdale (announced in June 2024) are set to enhance travel convenience for Alabama residents. The routes will provide direct access to popular destinations, making it easier for both leisure and business travelers. By expanding its network, Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines are likely to attract more passengers to Alabama-based airports, boosting local tourism and economic activity. This increased connectivity underscores Birmingham's growing importance as a regional travel hub.”

Birmingham offers nonstop service now to 21 destination airports in 18 cities.
