We're OLLI! – Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UAH holds open house Aug. 16, launches new logo

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (JUL 29, 2024) – When members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) urge others to join the fun, they keep the name simple:

"OLLI offers such interesting classes!"

"We love to dance at OLLI!"

"I've met so many new friends through OLLI!"

When OLLI at UAH holds an open house on Aug. 16, guests will see the popular name highlighted in a new logo. The event, set for 10 a.m. to noon in Wilson Hall on the UAH campus, gives the public a chance to meet OLLI instructors, board members and staff as well as learn about the 60-plus courses on the fall 2024 schedule. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

"We are excited to welcome all potential lifelong learners to UAH so they can see all that OLLI has to offer," says Clay Williams, OLLI program manager.

"This fall, we are offering many new and exciting courses such as 'Campaign News Coverage,' which will analyze the news coverage of our upcoming presidential election. Other new courses include 'Introduction to Chess Openings,' 'Twentieth Century American Poetry,' 'Appalachian Folklore & Arts in Alabama State Parks' and 'The Path to Victory: Grant, Sherman, and the Campaigns that Won the Civil War.'"

OLLI is open to ages 50 and up. New and returning members can register for classes and pick up their UAH parking permit at the open house. A photo booth and free popsicles from Suzy's Pops will add to the festive atmosphere – and everyone can register for door prizes.

Discussions about a new logo that would better reflect the way OLLI members talk about the program began among board members, Williams and other OLLI staff in 2023, the 30th year of lifelong learning at UAH. After going through a few designs, they chose one that incorporates the organization's ties to the Bernard Osher Foundation and UAH, but "OLLI" is the main focus.

"We are pleased to launch our new logo, which better resembles how we introduce the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to others," Williams says. "We are simply OLLI. It is definitely easier to convey."
