Secretary of State Wes Allen Reminds Alabamians to Register to Vote Before the Runoff Election

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen (R) issued a statement on Tuesday to remind Alabama citizens that the deadline to register to vote before the April 16, 2024 primary runoff election is next Monday, April 1, 2024.

"As Secretary of State, I want to encourage all eligible Alabama citizens to register to vote and to exercise this constitutional right," said Secretary Allen. "I am proud to know that the Primary Election was administered with election integrity and security as the top priority, and I look forward to ensuring that the April 16th election is fair, secure, and transparent."

Voters can register electronically online at: https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote.

A paper voter registration form may be delivered in person or by mail to your local Board of Registrars.

To be eligible to vote in Alabama, one must be a citizen of the United States, reside in Alabama, and be 18 years old on or before election day. One must not be barred from voting due to a disqualifying felony conviction or have been judged "mentally incompetent" by a court of law.

Crossover voting is illegal in the state of Alabama. If you voted in the Republican primary on March 5, you cannot vote in the Democratic primary runoff on April 16. Similarly, if you are a Democratic primary voter on March 5 you may not vote in the Republican primary runoff on April 16. Alabama does not have party registration so if you did not vote in the primary you can vote in the runoff election of your choice even if you normally vote for the other party or for a minor party. If a voter got a constitutional amendment only ballot, they may similarly vote in either party's primary runoff election.

You can view sample ballots at the Secretary of State's website to see if there is a runoff election you can participate in in your precinct. Go to: https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/2024-primary-runoff-election-sample-ballots.

On election day, April 16, polls will be open 7 am to 7 pm. Voters are required to present a valid form of photo identification when voting at their polling place or by absentee ballot.

You must have a valid photo ID to participate in any Alabama election. If you do not have a valid photo ID, you can get a free voter ID from your board of registrars or from the Secretary of State's office.
