The people's voice of reason
PIKE ROAD, Ala – On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 & 27, artists from across the State of Alabama and the country will converge in the Town of Pike Road Town Hall for the 7th Annual Pike Road Plein Air Paint Out, a two-day art event presented by the Pike Road Arts Council. In addition to creating one-of-a-kind pieces celebrating the landscapes of our hometown, the Pike Road Arts Council is partnering with the Pike Road Elementary School Art Department to engage students in the event.
Through this partnership, various third, fourth and fifth grade students will learn about plein air (outdoor) painting, and impressionism through the life and work of Claude Monet and his Gardens in Giverny, France. This initiative is being led by Patty Payne, Pike Road Arts Council Coordinator, Natalie Tucker, PRES Enrichment Specialist, and Sarah Gill, PRES Art Resource teacher.
Students will celebrate Monet's contributions to the world of art by creating 8" x 8" panels of their impressions of his famous water lily paintings. The individual pieces will be displayed in mosaic, representing both the size of Monet's works, as well as the volume: Monet completed over 250 water lily pieces in the last 30 years of his life. These paintings will be displayed at New Waters Realty, 2239 Marler Rd, on October 26 & 27, including during the Art Show & Sale, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Oct. 27 at New Waters Realty. It will be on display at the Pike Road Elementary School (500 Avenue of Learning) after the Plein Air Paint Out.
The Pike Road Arts Council and Alabama Plein Air Artists, whose members make up many of the Plein Air Paint Out participants, have engaged Pike Road Schools students in a variety of arts experiences throughout the years, including learning about beavers and building beaver dioramas, making Remembrance Poppies to be distributed at the Pike Road Veterans Appreciation Ceremony, providing painting demonstrations and facilitating painting projects.
The Pike Road Arts Council was formed in early 2012 as part of the ENHANCE Initiative. ENHANCE: A Vision with Focus is a detailed plan for accomplishing work in four key areas known as the town's Four Pillars: quality of life, planning, services and education. ENHANCE stresses the enrichment of quality of life, and includes organizations and projects related to exercise, nutrition, health, agriculture, nature and community education.
