Labor Day

Labor Day…The last 3-day weekend of the summer. It’s usually filled with people camping, biking, picnics, barbeques, or just hanging out. It’s the last official holiday of the summer. It usually is the beginning of college football (My hubby, Brian, says Roll Tide and I say War Eagle).

So, what is labor day? It was first celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City and became a federal holiday in 1894. It all started because a number of workers were killed at the hands of U.S. Military and U.S. Marshals over the Pullman Strike. President Grover Cleveland put into effect for reconciliation with the labor movement. It was rushed to congress and made an American holiday. All 50 states observe it as a state holiday.

Why is this important? Well, it is an awesome example of Jesus in your work and community. It says in Proverbs 30:10, “Never slander a worker to the employer, or the person will curse you, and you will pay for it.” We live in a day where slander in the work place carries no bounds and people are no longer loyal to each other. Sadly, some employers simply look to employees as a means to accomplish a task – what a sad place and environment to work in. Thankfully, not all work places are like this. Many places of work have great employee/employer relationships. This, I believe, is what Jesus desire’s for His people.

So, as you celebrate this Labor Day, remember Jesus’ awesome examples in your work and community.
