On Saturday, Navy defeated UAB in Birmingham 41 to 18. It was UAB's first American Athletic Conference game. UAB's defense simply could not stop Navy on the ground or in the air as the Midshipmen ran the ball for 227 yards against the Blazers on 42 carries averaging 5.4 yards per rush. The Navy also had 225 yards through the air on just 9 receptions out of 11 attempts. Navy had a 21 to 3 lead at halftime and never trailed in the game. UAB was its own worst enemy accumulating 11 penalties for...
The Alabama Gazette college football panel had a relatively good week picking Southeastern Conference games in week 5. Kentucky beating Ole Miss did shake the panel up a good bit – only Sam Adams had that one right. Alabama over Georgia was the game of the week and it came down to the last minute. Unfortunately Auburn's descent into the abyss has become accepted so most of the panel had predicted Oklahoma's victory over Auburn. The SEC games of week 5 were: Kentucky won at Ole Miss 20 to 17 A...
Under the lights of Veterans Memorial Stadium before a collective crowd of about 20,000 people with national sports media live streaming from iconic Troy, the Bobcats outpaced the Trojans resulting in a 38 to 17 win for Texas State in the teams 13th meeting. The two teams began play in 1997 and for only the second time - the Bobcats left Troy with a well-deserved win. In effect, outmanning and outpacing the young Trojans. In essence, Troy is rebuilding depth on both offense and defense. The...
We have now reached week six of the Southeastern Conference season and we are starting to see who has a legitimate team that can compete for a berth in the playoffs and which teams are just fighting for six or seven wins and a bowl game in Birmingham or Nashville at the end of the season. The week six SEC games are: Missouri at Texas A&M Auburn at Georgia Alabama at Vanderbilt Tennessee at Arkansas Ole Miss at South Carolina UCF at Florida The Alabama Gazette panel consists of: Brandon Moseley,...
Saturday ended as virtually everyone predicted beforehand – with the Hugh Freeze led Auburn Tigers losing to the Georgia Bulldogs. Auburn falls to 0 and 3 in the Southeastern conference and 2 and 4 overall. The Tigers could – in theory – rally down the stretch and win 5 of their last 6 to end the year with a winning record and salvage a trip to the Music City Bowl. That scenario seems awfully unlikely to anybody who was watching the game Saturday. Auburn's offense struggled to finish drive...
Last week, the Alabama Crimson Tide had its greatest victory of the new Kalen DeBoer era when the Tide vanquished the Georgia Bulldogs. On Saturday, Alabama lost to Vanderbilt for the first time since 1984 – when the late Ray Perkins was the head coach. Tide fans – and college football fans in general – are left wondering which is the real Tide team – the one that outlasted and outfought Georgia or the one that could not stop the Vanderbilt Commodores from scoring at will in a monumen...
In one of the most value-laden and morally rewarding stories in sports it should be noted that the Military-Student-Athletes of both Army and Navy Football programs are undefeated. And the Navy football program is undefeated this 2024 season so far. Peacefully pounding their opponents while bombs drop on conflict fronts throughout the world. Modern Gladiators? Now...

The American sports betting boom is a freight train hurtling down the track. Despite increasing calls for regulation, there's no sign it will slow down as states in on the action continue raking in absurd sums. With climbing revenue, tax revenues climb too. Sports betting behemoth New York tops the l...

Southeastern Conference football cranks up the 2024 season starting this weekend - August 31. The Alabama Gazette panelists ranked the SEC and found Georgia to be the class of the SEC. 4 of the 5 panelists picked Georgia to finish the regular season in first place in the SEC. Luisa Reyes was the lone vote picking Alabama. Texas was second, followed by Alabama. Historically that would be a disappointing year for Tide fans, but with the 12 team playoff format this year, third place will get you a...
On Monday, longtime TV and radio sports journalist John Longshore spoke to the Montgomery Kiwanis Club about the upcoming college football season. Longshore predicted that after 2026 there would be another round of conference realignment and that the SEC would not take Clemson and Florida State because Florida and South Carolina like being the only SEC teams in their respective states. Longshore said that the SEC's long-term expansion interests are in Notre Dame and North Carolina. Longshore...

The UAB Blazers opened the 2024 college football season on Thursday with a resounding win over Alcorn State 41 to 3. The game was delayed over an hour and twenty minutes due to bad weather in Birmingham; but that was the only setbacks that the Blazers faced on Thursday. The Blazers were up 28 to 3 by halftime, allowing Coach Trent Dilfer to substitute a lot of players in for the second half. UAB's offense ran the ball at will accounting for 298 yards of offense on the ground. The stout Blazer's...
On Sunday night the Louisiana State University Tigers face the University of Southern California. This is an early test for the SEC versus the Big 10. The Alabama Gazette panelists are all picking LSU to be victorious in their opener. USC started 5 and 0 in 2023; but collapsed down the stretch to a disappoint 7 and 5 finish. A victory over Louisville in the Holiday Bowl on December 27 did little to improve the mood of USC fans. Now USC head coach Lincoln Riley has to replace 2022 Heisman trophy...
For those Tide fans who have expressed trepidation about Kalen DeBoer as the new head coach – they had nothing to fret about on Saturday. Bama's beat down of the Western Kentucky team was as thoroughly dominating as possible. Alabama had 63 points and over 600 yards of offense. Star Quarterback Jalen Milroe threw for two touchdowns and ran it in for two touchdowns on the ground. The veteran signal caller contributed over 200 yards through the air and 79 yards of rushing. Milroe was sacked j...

Auburn jumped out to a 28 point lead in the first quarter and another 24 points in the second quarter to go to halftime...

The SEC games this week are: Arkansas visits Oklahoma State Texas visits Michigan McNeese State plays Texas A&M Tennessee Tech a...
