Wilfred Veras had a monster first game for the Barons. He had three hits in his four at bats including one home run and two RBIs. Veras is only 21 years old and appears to have enormous...

  • UConn ends Bama's basketball title dreams

    Brandon Moseley|Mar 1, 2024

It was the first time that the Alabama men's basketball team has ever played in basketball's Final Four; but this is almost as common for UConn as going to the football playoffs is for Alabama. That experience advantage proved to be just a little too much for the Tide to overcome. Bama fell 86 to 72 Saturday night. Alabama pulled close a few times; but every time they did the University of Connecticut Huskies went on a run and UConn's defense was just too much for Alabama. Nate Oats' crew...

  • Common Super Bowl prop bets in 5 charts

Stacker, Mike Taylor, Data Work By Karim Noorani|Feb 1, 2024

Super Bowl prop bets are a sport unto themselves. With two weeks between the NFL's conference championship games and what has often been the biggest event in the United States besides the moon landing, there is almost too much time to dissect every angle of the tilt. So, aside from speculating on the outcome of the game with point spread, total, and moneyline bets, gamblers can dig into prop bets—or propositions, which are usually player-centric but also feature fun side wagers that go well b...

  • The 5 biggest upsets of the 2023-24 NFL regular season

Stacker, Jill Jaracz, Data Work By Karim Noorani|Feb 1, 2024

Sports fans love making predictions. Of course, there's big money to be made with gambling and fantasy leagues—the American Gaming Association reported sports betting brought in $8.33 billion in the first 10 months of 2023—but it's also fun to prognosticate about players, teams, and stats. And while data may foreshadow particular outcomes, there's always the chance that underdogs will win. Americans love long-shot stories, which is a big reason why upsets are newsworthy. ATS.io compiled a ran...

    Brandon Moseley|Feb 1, 2024

On Monday, University of Alabama head football Coach Kalen DeBoer announced that he will not have one defensive coordinator; but two in 2024. DeBoer announced the decision that he has hired Maurice Linguist and Colin Hitschler to serve as co-defensive coordinators and secondary coaches. "We are excited to have Maurice and Colin join our staff at Alabama," DeBoer said in a statement. "Maurice brings both head coaching experience and an established record of success coaching defensive backs....

  • The Greatest of Our Generation Maybe Any Generation!

    Jan 1, 2024

The earth shook in the college football world as Nick Saben announced his retirement on January 11. First the stats: At Alabama his record was 201-29 with seven national titles. Saban and Bryant are the only two head coaches to win national titles at different FBS schools. He dominated the SEC with a record of 107-18. He has sent more players to the NFL (123) than any other head coach, those players amassing over $2 billion in player contracts. These stats were not built on money but on a disciplined style of coaching that focused on...

  • And Then There Were Two … Bama Faces Georgia in Title Game

    Stan Hurst|Jan 1, 2022

PREFACE from Editor on the 2022 National Championship: Revenge of the Georgia Bulldogs Georgia Wins 2022 National Championship as it Beats Alabama 33 to 18. The second showdown this season between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs happened on January 10, 2022, in Indianapolis, Ind. Georgia was favored to come out on top of the Tide, and, despite a really slow first quarter, the Bulldogs managed to find their feet, racking up the most points of the entire game in the fourth...

  • Alabama Beats Auburn in a Nail Bitter in Four Overtimes 24-22!

    Stan Hurst|Dec 1, 2021

Jordon Hare was literally a war zone during the 85th Iron Bowl—the greatest rivalry game in college football. While it might be a cliché that you can throw the record books out when Auburn and Alabama play; its always true. Alabama was a 20-and-a-half-point favorite going into Saturday’s contest. Which proves again why we play the games. The “experts” are not always right, and this one was a game that redefines “the stuff of which legends are made.” As an impartial and rabid fan, I sensed all w...

  • A New and Different 2021 Football Season is Dawning

    Stan Hurst|Aug 1, 2021

We are rapidly approaching a new and different College Football season. Hopefully we will step into a new normal, and will it be mask free? It sure looks like it from my vantage point. We have Coach Saban doing public services announcements encouraging Alabama fans to get the COVID-19 vaccine – we’ll have to see if that prods folk along. This will be the new normal for the foreseeable future. How many SEC fans will get vaccinated so that all the seats will be filled? Make no mistake, this wil...

  • Finally a complete Softball Season in 2021

    Stan Hurst|Jul 1, 2021

Hello Montgomery! I’ve been away for a while, and I’m so happy to back writing again. I’ve spent the spring and summer watching and taking notes as I enjoyed High School Softball. Now I have a confession, I have a granddaughter playing for LAMP. I went to many tournaments and various games. I got to talk to fans and coaches, umpires and sportscasters. I witnessed amazing athleticism that will surely carry some of the players to the college level. I was one of the scorekeepers for the regional to...

  • Real Men Played Softball

    Stan Hurst|Apr 1, 2021

The Alabama Gazette’s Sports Writer, Stan Hurst, had to take the month off. We look forward to hearing from him again in upcoming issues. In the meantime, we were fortunate to have a great article sent in for this space. Contributed by Kim Evans Slow-pitch softball was extremely popular during the 1970s and 80s, and in 1977, with the opening of Lagoon Park, a state of the art complex, Montgomery became the epicenter of the softball world. Countless teams traveled here from all over the s...

  • Hammerin' Hank We'll Miss You

    Stan Hurst|Feb 1, 2021

Major League Baseball Home Run leader and Mobile Alabama native, Hank Aaron passed this month, and he will surely be missed. The 86-year-old right-hander passed away January 22, 2021. Hank Aaron is the home-run king of Major League Baseball totaling 755 Home Runs eclipsing Babe Ruths’ 714. Hank Aaron hit 30 home runs a season for 15 seasons. He also hit 24 or more home runs every season from 1955 through 1973. Aaron had a total of 3,771 hits and his lifetime batting average is .305. While B...

  • Heisman Who?

    Stan Hurst|Jan 1, 2021

For the first time in 29 years a receiver has won the coveted Heisman Trophy. With one exception in 1997, Devonta Smith won this most impressive award dominated by quarterbacks and running backs. Devonta Smith – “Smitty” a humble and unassuming Crimson Tide receiver has brought home another award for Coach Saban’s bunch in Tuscaloosa. In is extemporaneous acceptance speech, Devonta gave credit to his family, his friends and supporters at home. His honest assessment of himself, as too small,...

  • The Only Game That Matters

    Stan Hurst|Dec 1, 2020

In this unsettling age of COVID we needed this game, and with the season unfolding in the pandemic era, this is the only game that mattered. You simply could not have imagined a scene like the one we witnessed on November 28, 2020. The stadium at Bryant Denny sparsely populated, neither band nor cheerleaders. And no head coach on the field for the Crimson tide. Coach Saban quarantined at home, not able to coach the Tide. The most highly contested of all football rivalries with only a few fans...

  • New Season, Same Saga Plays Out on the Plains

    Stan Hurst|Nov 1, 2020

It’s an all too familiar story that’s mushrooming up again at Auburn. The “we need to fire the head coach” anthem is growing stronger each week. For more seasons than I can count, this thing seems to bubble up as the losses pile up. So many times, the blame sees to get focused on the offensive coordinator. So let me see if I can get this straight. During the past four years, Auburn has had four different play callers, offensive coordinators; Rhett Lashley, Kenny Dillingham, Head Coach Gus Mal...

  • Football ... Really?

    Stan Hurst|Oct 1, 2020

As we find ourselves on the eve of our beloved SEC football season; will we enjoy the new sanitized product with just a handful of fans in attendance? Major League Baseball is nearing the end of the sixty game regular season. At the time of this writing we have six games left with the Oakland Athletics having clinched the American League West. The New York Yankees, The Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins all have clinched a playoff berth. Looks like the Cleveland Indians or...

  • Playing by the COVID-19 Rules

    Stan Hurst|Sep 1, 2020

Never in our lifetimes have we seen the Sports World turned upside-down and inside-out. I find myself disjointed from the sports world. It’s difficult to analyze any of the teams we follow in the normal pattern of past experience. I have to shrug my shoulders at the attempts to do so; it’s almost delusional. So I’ll not write about position players and depth charts and potential recruits. It’s frankly indecorous to report in this fashion. The NBA is playing in a bubble to protect players...

  • From Pigskins to Rawhids

    Stan Hurst|Aug 1, 2020

Opening day for the 2020 MLB Season is just a few days away. Albeit, it’s just 60 games, but at least we have baseball. On July 23rd, the Yankees open at the Nationals, and the Giants open at the Dodgers. It’s new territory for all of us. There will be no fans in the stadiums for this third of a regular baseball season. At least one team is offering the fans a way to participate. Dodgers fans can purchase a placard of themselves to have placed in the stadium for all home games. While I don...

  • From Pigskins to Rawhides

    Stan Hurst|Jul 1, 2020

Say it Ain’t so, Joe! Major League Baseball to return with a 60-game season plus playoffs … But can it sustain itself through the Pandemic? How quickly another month has arrived and left us, still wondering what the prospects are for any sports season of any kind to take place. Eventually in June, Dixie Youth Baseball returned along with some travel baseball and softball teams playing tournaments again. This is wonderful for our kids, and hopefully our communities COVID-19 numbers will imp...

  • To Play or Not to Play ... What's the Question?

    Stan Hurst|Jun 1, 2020

This is the season of non-seasons, like no other time in our lifetimes. We may or may not have baseball this year, we may have football this fall, but we might not. We do have NASCAR, but no fans are allowed. The news each day brings less clarity and more confusion about the future of sports events. NASCAR is surviving only because it makes more money from television than on fans in the stands. Come to think of it, perhaps this is one of the things that makes this particular motor-sport...

  • Will the Games Stand Tall?

    Stan Hurst|May 1, 2020

While ballparks and all sports venues remain closed, there is hope the Football Season can be salvaged. Baseball appears to be all but lost, while there has been a plan “spit-balled” that some games with all 30 teams might be played in Arizona and Texas. Actually relocating all MLB teams to these two states and get the season in. Frankly, that’s a long shot at this place in time. It looks very unlikely to me. If our current situation related to COVID-19 improves, perhaps a half-season could...
